Do Pagans and Witches really fly on brooms? This is the question most often asked by younger children who I have met. With the advent of "The Harry Potter" series showing the wizards flying across the fields in a "Quidditch" match, one can understand the question. What amazes me is the many Pagans and Wiccan's that do not know the symbolic meaning of the broom from the Old Religion.

In the Old Religion, as in organizations like the Masons, the use of ordinary working items were used as symbolism in many rituals and meetings. Probably, without a doubt, the most least understood, yet most well known, is that of the broom. From ancient times the broom was a symbol of domestic order and domestic bliss. It was a powerful symbol as the woman's preeminence at the time was still in the fore front. It was expected that when women would arrive at their meetings (now called Sabbats or rituals) they would be expected to carry the symbol of their position - the broom.

When women went to any meeting of any sort, regardless of whether it was a ceremony or not, they were expected to bring their symbol of position - the broom. Upon arrival at a meeting, they would display the "staff of office" (the broom) and turn the broom like a hobby horse and enter the sacred space ridding their brooms. So yes, Pagans and Witches do ride upon brooms - just not as most would think. Even today the hobbyhorse toys are derived from these very rituals.

But this was only one of the two parts that the simple straw broom played in our origin. The second use of the broom as a symbol was during the "harvest" ritual when the women would hold it over their crops and implore the deities to make the crops grow to the height of the broom.

Other than those two important symbolic uses, the broom has no other history in Paganism or Wiccan. Although, there is nothing magical about a straw broom, the symbolic meaning remains true with many that follow the Old Religion. In many homes you will find a straw broom of some sort hanging upon a wall representing the domestic bliss they pray for each day.

when i was about 6 in 2000 i had something exactly like that i had a nimbus 2000 and it made wosshing sounds and thats it no vibration at all and im so glad i would not recomend that for kids or teens thats just wrong they need to quit making those

You can take the Flight power at level 14, as long as you've taken one of the prerequisites (either Hover or Air Superiority). Other travel powers work the same - they become available at level 14 as long as you have one of the prerequisites.

Costume pieces are unlockable in a lot of different ways. You can find or buy costume piece recipes, you can unlock the Vanguard pieces with Vanguard merits, and some are rewards from special events or missions, pre-order bonuses, and veteran rewards. Capes are unlockable at level 20 after completing a short series of missions, and auras are available at level 30 after completing another mission.

World Fashion: Japan

Japan occupies an archipelago that stretches for 2,400 km, isolated by the sea from the rest of the world.  Its geographic location, as well as the long periods of its political and cultural seclusion, have fueled the conception of its uniqueness. Yet Japan has largely been influenced by neighboring countries, especially China, which  prided itself on an ancient and highly evolved civilization when Japan was still living in the Stone Age. It was only natural that Japan would seek guidance from its neighbor in all matters of technology, religion, economy, and even fashion.

Japanese political structure was also influenced by Chinese traditions, though rather ineffectively. Prior to the 7th century AD, Japan was divided up among a number of clans, presided over by an inept emperor. Then, in 645 AD, the Fujiwara clan rose to power and proceeded to forge Japan's destiny.

J?nihitoe and the Heian era
By the 9th century the powerful chief of the Fujiwara clan had been made regent for the reigning emperor. The Heian era (794-1185 AD) had began. Known as the first great peak of Japanese culture, the Heian period was characterized by courtly elegance. Indeed, the aristocracy took great interest in clothing. Japanese noblewomen wore the J?nihitoe or "12 unlined robes". It consisted of twelve unlined garments of different colors, worn one atop the other in such a manner that a narrow band of each robe was visible at the neck, sleeves and hem.

Under the J?nihitoe, women wore the kosode or "small sleeves". The T-shaped undergarment made of white silk was composed of two rectangular pieces of fabric sewn together at the center back and at the edges. Two additional pieces of fabric were added to the front. The collar and the sleeves, with a small opening for the wrists, were attached at the end. Kosode, the forerunner of the kimono, had to be fitted to the body every time it was put on.

The Heian noblemen wore the dsode or "large sleeves". The large robe had wide sleeves with large wrist openings and was worn with long, full trousers.

Outside the court, people lived a simple, modest life. Peasants could afford only base fibers and the majority had never seen the fine silks worn by nobility. The lavish existence of the elite was met by much criticism from the less privileged provincial clan leaders, which eventually would lead to the fading of the Fujiwara.

Kosode and the Edo era
In the period 1185-1333 AD power passed to the military dictators known as Shogun. Officially they ruled in the emperor's name, but were in fact independent. Their military retainers were the samurai. Both shogun and samurai lived according to the Zen Buddhist ideals and to dress simply was a virtue. The volume of clothing was reduced layer by layer and the kosode, that was once an undergarment, became the shogun's outer attire. On the other hand, fighting armor was far from simple.

By the 16th century,  articles made in Japan began to appear in Western markets and European merchants became fascinated with the mysterious lands where such magnificent objects were made. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in 1543. They brought with them food crops from the Americas as well as muskets, which would help put an end to the baronial wars. A new power emerged, the Tokugawa shogunate (1615-1868), whose capital was moved to Edo, today's Tokyo.

It was in the latter part of the Edo period that the kosode's elaboration reached its peak. This was mainly due to the advances in cloth-making techniques such as kasuri (ikat) or resist-dyeing; shibori (tie-dye), in which areas of cloth are tied off before dyeing; yuzen, paste-resist dyed cloth patterned with freehand, brush-applied dyes; and shiro-age, in which the design is reserved entirely by paste-resist dyeing. Designers and artisans also contributed to the elegance and beauty of the kosode by embellishing the monochrome garment with intricate, colorful surface designs.

Women's cosode differed in style according to their social status; Young, single women wore the colorful furisode, a version of the kosode with long, hanging sleeves. The older women's kosode allowed for prescribed changes in sleeve length, patterning and coloration.

The popular sash that holds the kosode in place is called the obi. Prior to the 1680s, this had been a narrow, flat tie or rope-like braid. It was only in the first decades of the 19th century that the obi expanded to reach from under the bust to below the abdomen.

Footwear did not differ for men and women. It consisted of the hemp sandals or wooden clogs known as the geta, and the flat straw-soled sandals, known as the zori. They were all secured to the foot with thongs and worn with white cotton socks or tabi.

Pale skin was aesthetically pleasing and sought after, this is why women would whiten their faces with rice powder. Eyes and mouth were accentuated. Prior to the Meiji Restoration, men also painted their faces with a thick paste of white powder. On the other hand, black symbolized nobility and it was an ancient tradition for men to blacken their teeth.

Headdress was not popular, for women's hair was styled in elaborate fashioned coiffures, adorned with a variety of pins and ornaments, kogai, as well as elaborate combs, kushi. Japanese women wore no other jewelry.

Women from the upper class could go out in public and attend a limited range of leisure activities including the kabuki theater, where one could see and be seen. Both men and women wore their best attire and would change clothing several times during the day-long performances. On the other hand, the kabuki costumes were one of the most striking aspects of the performances. They often set fashion trends in Japan.

The Tokugawa shogunate solidified the power of shoguns over the stratified social system. They ruled over the distinct classes of warriors, farmers, craftsmen, and merchants, officially in the name of the emperor, but in fact had stripped him of his power. Settled in their habits and traditions, shoguns believed that Japan was immune to change and external influence. Their world, however, was already changing. European culture and Christianity with its teachings of universal equality would prove subversive to the established social system.

In the 17th century, Japan initiated a persecution of Christianians and Japan withdrew from the outside world. The self-imposed economic and political isolation, which  lasted for over two hundred years, was a time of prosperity and peace. Unfortunately, it would have dire consequences. When in the 19th century westerners returned with modern weapons, Japan's obsolete military presented no challenge.

Japan had witnessed the role Europeans had played in the forceful transformation of China and adopted a program of radical change of their own will. Unlike China, they had the means to change. The Tokugawa era had brought economic success, which in its turn had led to a diversified society. The port of Osaka and Edo had been transformed into thriving metropolis and change was already in the air before U.S. Naval Commander Matthew Perry forced open relations with the Japanese in 1853.

The Kimono and the Meiji Restoration
In 1867, the Tokugawa shogunate came to an end and power was restored to the emperor Mutsuhito. The Meiji ("enlightened rule") Restoration had begun. The Japanese government aimed for equality with the West and knew it would have to acieve it on the West's terms. In the first five years Japan adopted a prefectural system of administration, a postal system, a daily newspaper, a ministry of education, a railroad, the Gregorian calendar and military conscription. The samurai warriors joined either the army, under Prussians' leadership, or the navy, advised by the British. Young men were sent abroad to learn the western ways.

One of the innovations adopted from the West was the tailor-made dress. Western-style military uniforms and Western-style business suits were worn in public; they, however, had no place in the privacy of the Japanese home. Traditional-style architectural buildings are carpeted with tatami mats and many activities such as sleeping and eating are performed on the floor. The fitted-costume was inappropriate and rather uncomfortable. Instead, Japanese wore the loosely sashed version of today's kimono.

Kimono or "object of wear" was the word that in the late 1800s replaced the centuries-old term kosode. An accepted explanation for that change of terms is that faced with the cultural shock of finding themselves dressed in western attire, the Japanese felt compelled to find a new name for the historic robe.

The patterning of each type of kimono is strictly categorized. Styles include the dan ganwri, which consists in alternating blocks of similar motifs; the katami gawariy in which the right and left halves of the kimono bear a different design; or sode gawariy in which each sleeve is differently patterned. Nature is exquisitely present in motifs such as a blizzard of blown blossoms, flowing water patterns, or scattered maple leaves on pine bark.

Female underclothes are just as complex. They include a thin camisole with short sleeves known  as  hadajuban,  a wraparound slip of a light fabric – the susoyoke, and a third under-kimono made from a light, white fabric. Long-stringed rolls, pads, towels and  padded vests are used to even out any defects of the body line so the kimono will hang perfectly.

The five-crested haori is another aspect of the tradition lying behind this formal attire. The crests refer to the little circular motifs printed or woven into the haori cloth, representing a person's clan ancestry. Japanese heraldry is older than European and comprises 400 basic family crests, with over 20,000 sublineages.

why do male balelt dancers often look like they are not wearing pants?

I have been working at the PNB ballet and am embarrassed to ask anyone in person. Most of the time, the men in these performances have a costume that is very detailed on top and below the waist... it literally looks like they forgot to get dressed!! From the back they almost look naked. In the front they have this weird, Ken-doll appearance.. I am an older woman, so to me these guys are cute eye candy (I am not really complaining!) but it seems like this odd Emperor's New Clothes situation. If I speak up will they all notice it ?

It is the ballet and all dignified and cultured, with rich, elderly patrons, and these guys, to me, look one step removed from pornographic.

I will probably get lots of snide replies, but is there anyone who has an education about the history or culture of ballet who can explain this? I find it a real puzzle.. I mean, I don't mind the sight of a cute young man showing almost everything off, but the situation strikes me as kind of bizarre

Something I always liked is have them perform to the class a small piece of music they learned in the instrument they're learning.
oh! I remember the first years in my school were making podcasts about their favourite artists. they had to write it down at first. (teacher had set some questions they had to answer: favourite artist and what you like about them and stuff like that). Then they recorded themselves and played it back to the whole class.

Another idea is to do what Jack Black did in School of Rock and have them form a band lol!

Time is so fast. It seems like yesterday that I was just playing with my dolls then suddenly I find myself in this developed body. How did I become this tall at an alarming pace? Maybe somebody has hit the fast forward button and set it to max speed. I used to recall the times during summer that I would climb up the trees near my grandfather's house and father would scream at the top of his lungs telling me to come down and stick with my Barbie. I was sure he was worried that I would be influenced by my male relatives whom I am very close with and grow up to become a tomboy or something. He need not worry for even during those times I already had aspirations of becoming a fashion designer like my idols Vera Wang and Monique Lhuiller. Their designs are so dreamy and I often spend hours drawing them. Besides, I only climb the trees to get a good look at this really gorgeous and definitely dressed to kill neighbor who seemed to pop out of a fashion magazine.

Someday, my name will be posted in the fashion magazines; talked about in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Milan and London-the various fashion capital in the world. My creations will be worn by supermodels and sought after by the well-heeled and Hollywood stars. I would become a star in my own right, and I will open flag ship stores and high end boutiques world-wide.

I daydream a lot about this (to the relief of my father for he doe not have to worry about me climbing trees again) and it is in one of these daydreams that my friend called me up and interrupted my building of my 8th branch in Dubai. "Hey bff. What's up?" "Have you heard of Bratz games?" "Bratz games? I have not. Is that a new doll?" That was the first time I heard about Bratz games and it has significantly reduced my day dreaming sessions. Since then, I have returned over and over to the Bratz games site and dress up my favorite Bratz doll in different outfit ranging from elegant to something wilder.

It is really fun mixing and matching their accessories and the outcomes of some designs are just so funny. It would really crack me up and I would find more ways for them to achieve a more unique look. I even held a little contest with my best friend to see who has the most creative attire for our favorite Bratz character. The winner will have to treat the other to some sundae at our local ice cream parlor. The judge is usually my little brother who, of course, almost always side with his beloved big sister.

National Sarcasm Society Crowns a New King - Me!

Did you miss my coronation by the National Sarcasm Society? I'm the new king of sarcasm. Alright, not true - you caught me. But I do give them plenty of examples of sarcasm to use in their promotional materials. On a more serious note, National Sarcasm Society crown notwithstanding, I wanted to share a bit of my very real realization about the power of words when employed to slice and dice like a Ginsu.

As the sands of time seem to have boarded a bullet train lately, I've noticed that my concern over the words I use has dramatically shifted. Whereas I used to be the captain of the "S.W.A.T." (Sarcastic Wit, Atomic Tongue) team, I have now discovered the power of wounding with words. These wounds linger whilst broken bones heal relatively quickly and are soon forgotten.

Think of that, for a second.

If you were to pass from present tense into past tense - and all of us make that transition - then what would remain with the folks you leave behind? Two things, really: your words and your deeds. What you've done and said will linger in the heart and minds of those that are left in the wake. It doesn't matter that you were well-intentioned, either.

So: how will you be remembered? Hopefully not as king of the National Sarcasm Society!

What will echo through the ears of your kids, friends and family when you're a historical figure? You may not want to think of things in such permanent categories, but someone needs to tell it like it is. It may as well be me.

Now, read this next paragraph very carefully. When my dad made the transition from "is" to "was," it was the singularly hardest day of my life. Do you know what made that day such a bleak event? It wasn't the food. That was fantastic. No, the difficulty lay in the fact that I'd left so much unsaid. Here are some things I wish my dad had heard more from me:

• I'm sorry, dad.
• I was wrong.
• I'm proud of you, dad.
• I forgive you, dad - do you forgive me?
• I love your black socks off.

Alright, don't ask - I've no idea what on this Google Earth dad insisted on wearing those hideous black socks. I'm not sure if they were actually navy blue, either. Heck, they could have been white, but really dirty...I wish he'd heard that from me, too. "Change your socks, dad!"

There are plenty of things dad did for us, style just wasn't one of them. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and all the examples of sarcasm that pepper my life and thinking came from his mind. Part of my problem is trying to keep his memory alive with my sharp tongue.

Look, the point of this article is to illustrate that we have only a very brief life under the sun. It's a short opportunity to make the most of our words. Chew on that before you open your flame-thrower full of scathing words and pull the trigger to loose examples of sarcasm that the National Sarcasm Society would wince at.

- Be sure the costume is light and bright enough to be clearly visible to vehicles and other passers-by.

- For greater visibility, you can add reflective tape in a decorative way to the costume. You can also add this same reflective tape to the bag that is to collect all of the candy.

- Have your child carry a flashlight to be seen easily

- Halloween Costumes should not be so long that the child could trip and fall over it.

- Halloween Costumes should include sturdy shoes. It's not a good idea for your child who is dressing up as Marilyn Monroe to be walking about in your high heels.

- Hats and scarves should be tied tight enough that they do not come loose and fall in children's face or drag the ground where they could trip and fall.

- A natural mask made of make-up is better if you are concerned with a loose fitting mask that may restrict a child's breathing. If you use a make-up mask be sure you use non-toxic and hypoallergenic makeup.

- Make sure your Ninja is not carrying a fake sword that is sharp! All swords, knives etc should be soft and flexible.

- Make sure the Halloween costume is made from flame retardant material.

- Make sure all Halloween costumes wigs and accessories are labeled flame retardant

- Make sure your child knows your home phone number and 9-1-1.

- Review with your children the principle of "Stop-Drop-Roll" in the event that the costume catches fire.

- It's best for the child to walk door to door instead or rollerblade, bicycle or skate board.

Halloween costumes safety is the one that is neglected the most by parents.
